It's Friday night, and you're getting ready for a night out with friends or your significant other. You want to do something special with your hair, so you pull out your curling iron. Your hair looks great for the next hour. But, after that, it falls flat.
Does this sound familiar?
Losing all that hard work and perfect curls can be frustrating. Learning why your curls fall flat is key to preventing those stringy strands.
These are the four most common reasons your hair may not hold a curl.
You're using the wrong product.
Many hair styling products contain oil and silicone. When you use those ingredients on fine, soft hair, your curls are not going to last.
Instead, you need lighter products that don't use as much moisture. A texturizing product will prepare the hair to hold curls. Apply it when the hair is almost dry. When finishing, use a heat styling product that does not include waxes, silicone or oil.
You're using the wrong blow dryer.
A weak blow dryer will not dry your hair fast enough for curls to take hold. A strong blow dryer dries hair quickly and lets curling irons do its job. Use a round brush to build in volume.
Your hair doesn't have enough texture.
Soft hair doesn't hold curl well because the cuticle is closed. An opened cuticle can hold a new pattern much better than a closed one.
To get that cuticle open, you need to texture your hair. A texturizing iron can do the job. It uses ridged plates to expand the cuticle structure. This helps curls take hold and last.
You aren't letting your hair cool down properly.
You apply the curling iron to a section of hair and get a perfect curl. Before it fully cools, you let it fall to your shoulder as you work on the next curl. It actually takes up to 30 minutes for a curl to cool and set into place.
Instead of letting that curl fall to your shoulder, clip it into place and let it cool as you work on the next curl. After all the curls cool down, you can release them and achieve a finished look of perfect curls.
