In recent years, biotin has become a hot button vitamin. Many hail the effects of biotin on skin, hair and nail growth. Some users rave about the changes in their hair and nails after taking the supplement for a short amount of time.

However, there are cons to taking such a supplement. We’ve decided to dispel the biotin myths so you can figure out if you should be taking it or not.

What is Biotin?
So, what is this vitamin all about? Simply put, biotin is part of the B-complex family. Responsible for everything from the synthesis of fatty acids and glucose, it's naturally found in egg yolks, liver and yeast products. Most people do not get enough biotin naturally, and supplementation can offer massive benefits, especially when it comes to the hair, nails and skin.

The Pros
Biotin has plenty of pros. After all, that’s why so many people are taking the supplement and seeing great results.
  • Biotin has been known to cause greater hair growth. Biotin can make hair grow faster and fuller, although mileage may vary.
  • Biotin can help to keep skin clear and moisturized as it helps the metabolizing of fatty acids needed to keep skin healthy. It can also help heal brittle and breaking nails for the same reason.
  • Biotin is beneficial in digestion and can actually help keep blood sugar levels more stable throughout the day. This is a benefit for those who have a difficult time maintaining their blood sugar levels.

The Cons
As with any supplement, it isn’t all positive reviews. Negative effects have been experienced by those taking biotin supplements. Some users have reported acne and other skin issues that coincide with taking supplementation. Others have experienced digestive issues.

Before you begin taking any supplementation, including biotin, it's important to speak to your doctor to ensure there isn’t an underlying cause for your issues. Hair loss, dry skin and brittle nails can be symptoms of more serious medical conditions that need to be treated by a professional. Some who deal with thyroid issues have such symptoms. Before you get started, see your doctor to discuss your concerns and to figure out if biotin is right for you.
