Pregnancy is an amazing and wondrous thing. Still mysterious in some ways, doctors and experts have been studying the effects of pregnancy on the body for decades, and they all seem to conclude one thing – pregnancy can affect women in every bodily system, including their hair. In fact, pregnancy can affect the very structure of the hair and alter texture, even permanently in some cases.
How Can Pregnancy Change Hair?
Pregnancy can change and alter your hair in just about every way you can think of.
According to experts, pregnancy hormones can slow the rate at which hair falls out and it can also alter the life cycle of individual hairs. Some women find that they have more hair during pregnancy because of this, or they notice their hair isn’t falling out as much during their pregnancy.
Pregnancy hormones can also change the texture of hair. Some women report losing their curls during pregnancy. Women with previously straight hair may notice that waves and curls form as their baby grows.
Oily hair can become oilier and dry hair can become dryer, too. The reverse is possible as well. Finally, some report a difference in the fineness of their hair as they enter the second trimester of their pregnancy.
Why Does It Happen?
The reason behind changes in hair texture are two-fold, according to experts in the field. Prenatal vitamins are offering the body, and thus the skin system, nutrients in higher concentrations than most women are used to taking. This can positively impact the skin and hair. When the body has enough nutrients to sustain hair growth, many women will notice a change in the amount of hair they have and the feeling of that hair.
While prenatal vitamins might be the reason you feel like you have more hair, it doesn’t account for changes in texture. Doctors suggest that these changes are directly attributed to changes in hormone levels, and the stability of those levels throughout the course of a full-term pregnancy.
During pregnancy hormone levels change and rise to support the growing fetus. This can alter the texture of some women’s hair, although not all women will experience a noticeable change.
