![]() Many highly motivated people dream of careers as hair stylists, but some hold back because of an industry-wide shortage of quality education. Some are afraid that they won't be able to support themselves as a stylist, and these fears may be justified. Statistics show that 80 percent of hair stylists quit after only two or three years in the business. Additionally, about 52 salons close every day, and the average length of a stylist’s career is a measly three to five years. Due to decreasing pay and inadequate training, it's becoming increasingly difficult for stylists to support themselves. This can be disheartening for current hairdressers and those interested in a career as a hair stylist alike. How Can You Become A Successful Stylist? These statistics are alarming, and they reveal just how challenging the salon industry has become. However, with the right education and guidance, it is possible to have a long, well-paying career as a hairdresser. That’s where the Associate Program comes in. For your convenience, we collected some information about popular hair color choices, and how they react over time. Radiant Red Artificial redheads know the pain of watching their color fade. Artificial reds, for a myriad of different reasons, fade faster than any other color in the color palette. The reason is complex and scientific, but the long and short of it is that the molecules used in red dye don't penetrate deep into the shaft of the hair. Because of this, it is more prone to washing out and thus fading over time. Intense reds fade the quickest and most notably, while auburn and more red-tinted browns tend to have more staying power. Bewitching Blonde If you are a brunette with plans of going blonde, you should be aware that going blonde isn't exactly a dying process. Instead, the color needs to be stripped, then toner applied to get the color you are seeking. Because of this, blonde dyes do have staying power, but the hair needs to be treated with care to ensure the color doesn't turn brassy. Brunette Beauty Brown dyes have the most staying power. Brown is the most common natural hair color, so fading colors generally just turn into another brown. Brown dye also penetrates the hair more deeply than other dyes, leading to a more locked in color. Different shades of brown are the most low maintenance hair dye options. Bold Brights Recently, a new trend has emerged. More people are dying their hair vibrant colors. From blues to rainbows to everything in between, this trend is especially popular with the younger crowd. While the lavenders and pinks you see on Pinterest are certainly eye-catching, the colors come with heavy upkeep. In most cases, bright colors can only be added to hair that has been stripped of its natural hue. After that is done, the color is added. Remember, the brighter and more intense the color, the more likely it is to fade. Lavender, a relatively new trend, has more staying power than hot pink. Muted blues have more staying power than fire reds. Once you've picked the color that will turn you into a whole new you, call the professionals at The Salon by Lora Brown. We'll be happy to help you find the perfect shade for your new hairstyle. ![]() It's Friday night, and you're getting ready for a night out with friends or your significant other. You want to do something special with your hair, so you pull out your curling iron. Your hair looks great for the next hour. But, after that, it falls flat. Does this sound familiar? Losing all that hard work and perfect curls can be frustrating. Learning why your curls fall flat is key to preventing those stringy strands. These are the four most common reasons your hair may not hold a curl. You're using the wrong product. Many hair styling products contain oil and silicone. When you use those ingredients on fine, soft hair, your curls are not going to last. Instead, you need lighter products that don't use as much moisture. A texturizing product will prepare the hair to hold curls. Apply it when the hair is almost dry. When finishing, use a heat styling product that does not include waxes, silicone or oil. You're using the wrong blow dryer. A weak blow dryer will not dry your hair fast enough for curls to take hold. A strong blow dryer dries hair quickly and lets curling irons do its job. Use a round brush to build in volume. Your hair doesn't have enough texture. Soft hair doesn't hold curl well because the cuticle is closed. An opened cuticle can hold a new pattern much better than a closed one. To get that cuticle open, you need to texture your hair. A texturizing iron can do the job. It uses ridged plates to expand the cuticle structure. This helps curls take hold and last. You aren't letting your hair cool down properly. You apply the curling iron to a section of hair and get a perfect curl. Before it fully cools, you let it fall to your shoulder as you work on the next curl. It actually takes up to 30 minutes for a curl to cool and set into place. Instead of letting that curl fall to your shoulder, clip it into place and let it cool as you work on the next curl. After all the curls cool down, you can release them and achieve a finished look of perfect curls. With a bit of practical advice, you can get the curl you want for your special night. Of course, you can always get some help by making an appointment at The Salon by Lora Brown. One of our stylists can give your hair the curl and look you desire. ![]() There are multiple paths to becoming a hair stylist.
