Many highly motivated people dream of careers as hair stylists, but some hold back because of an industry-wide shortage of quality education.

Some are afraid that they won't be able to support themselves as a stylist, and these fears may be justified. Statistics show that 80 percent of hair stylists quit after only two or three years in the business.

Additionally, about 52 salons close
every day, and the average length of a stylist’s career is a measly three to five years.

Due to decreasing pay and inadequate training, it's becoming increasingly difficult for stylists to support themselves. This can be disheartening for current hairdressers and those interested in a career as a hair stylist alike.

How Can You Become A Successful Stylist?
These statistics are alarming, and they reveal just how challenging the salon industry has become.

However, with the right education and guidance, it is possible to have a long, well-paying career as a hairdresser. That’s where the
Associate Program comes in.

The Associate Program is a step-by-step system for stylists at any level that helps you become a top-notch hair dresser and a sharp businessperson. It prepares you for a sustainable career by giving you the knowledge and tools necessary to keep moving forward when others are giving up.

Career-Changing Benefits Of The Associate Program
If you’re not convinced that you need the Associate Program for salon success, consider these benefits.

1. Quality Training

3. Higher Pay
Nobody wants to work their tails off for pennies. Stylists are known for working long days and even longer nights. But, when you receive a high level of education, you’re more qualified to advance in your salon career. The Associate Program guarantees you better pay – enough to support your family for years after you complete it.

4. Connecting With A Mentor
We all need someone to turn to when things get tough. With the Associate Program, you can work with an experienced, successful mentor who will guide and encourage you along the way. This mentor has gone through all the challenges of the hairdressing business. They can give you the support and knowledge you need to succeed.

5. Flexibility And Balance

There are countless ways to get hands-on experience in the salon industry, but the Associate Program is the only educational program in the Amarillo area that offers training in both hairdressing and business management.

Alisha Alvarado joined the Associate Program in June 2017 after graduating from the Eric Fisher Academy, an award-winning cosmetology school in Wichita, Kansas. Alisha was initially drawn to the program’s support and education.
As a licensed stylist, she wanted more than just a booth. She wanted a stable, fulfilling career.

“Working here at The Salon by Lora Brown is a lot different than the other salons that I’ve worked at, mainly because we keep up with education,” Alisha says. “I get feedback and I get to practice these skills on the people I bring in.”

The Associate Program is challenging and rewarding at the same time. Alisha knows  with the knowledge and experience she is gaining, her time at The Salon will provide her with a secure foundation to build her future.

“The skills that I’ve learned being here at The Salon will most definitely help me with my career,” Alisha says.

What Hair Color Lasts The Longest?

hair colors
Taking on a bold, new hair color is an easy and fun way to change things up in the new year, but before you take the plunge, you'll want to research hair dye and which colors will give you your desired effect. For your convenience, we collected some information about popular hair color choices, and how they react over time.

Radiant Red

Artificial redheads know the pain of watching their color fade. Artificial reds, for a myriad of different reasons, fade faster than any other color in the color palette. The reason is complex and scientific, but the long and short of it is that the molecules used in red dye don't penetrate deep into the shaft of the hair. Because of this, it is more prone to washing out and thus fading over time. Intense reds fade the quickest and most notably, while auburn and more red-tinted browns tend to have more staying power.

Bewitching Blonde

If you are a brunette with plans of going blonde, you should be aware that going blonde isn't exactly a dying process. Instead, the color needs to be stripped, then toner applied to get the color you are seeking. Because of this, blonde dyes do have staying power, but the hair needs to be treated with care to ensure the color doesn't turn brassy.

Brunette Beauty

Brown dyes have the most staying power. Brown is the most common natural hair color, so fading colors generally just turn into another brown. Brown dye also penetrates the hair more deeply than other dyes, leading to a more locked in color. Different shades of brown are the most low maintenance hair dye options.

Bold Brights

Recently, a new trend has emerged. More people are dying their hair vibrant colors. From blues to rainbows to everything in between, this trend is especially popular with the younger crowd. While the lavenders and pinks you see on Pinterest are certainly eye-catching, the colors come with heavy upkeep.

In most cases, bright colors can only be added to hair that has been stripped of its natural hue. After that is done, the color is added.

Remember, the brighter and more intense the color, the more likely it is to fade. Lavender, a relatively new trend, has more staying power than hot pink. Muted blues have more staying power than fire reds.

Once you've picked the color that will turn you into a whole new you, call the professionals at The Salon by Lora Brown. We'll be happy to help you find the perfect shade for your new hairstyle.

4 Reasons Why Your Curls Always Fall Flat

11/14/2017

Picture
It's Friday night, and you're getting ready for a night out with friends or your significant other. You want to do something special with your hair, so you pull out your curling iron. Your hair looks great for the next hour. But, after that, it falls flat.

Does this sound familiar?

Losing all that hard work and perfect curls can be frustrating. Learning why your curls fall flat is key to preventing those stringy strands.

These are the four most common reasons your hair may not hold a curl.

You're using the wrong product.

Many hair styling products contain oil and silicone. When you use those ingredients on fine, soft hair, your curls are not going to last.

Instead, you need lighter products that don't use as much moisture. A texturizing product will prepare the hair to hold curls. Apply it when the hair is almost dry. When finishing, use a heat styling product that does not include waxes, silicone or oil.

You're using the wrong blow dryer.

A weak blow dryer will not dry your hair fast enough for curls to take hold. A strong blow dryer dries hair quickly and lets curling irons do its job. Use a round brush to build in volume.

Your hair doesn't have enough texture.

Soft hair doesn't hold curl well because the cuticle is closed. An opened cuticle can hold a new pattern much better than a closed one.

To get that cuticle open, you need to texture your hair. A texturizing iron can do the job. It uses ridged plates to expand the cuticle structure. This helps curls take hold and last.

You aren't letting your hair cool down properly.

You apply the curling iron to a section of hair and get a perfect curl. Before it fully cools, you let it fall to your shoulder as you work on the next curl. It actually takes up to 30 minutes for a curl to cool and set into place.

Instead of letting that curl fall to your shoulder, clip it into place and let it cool as you work on the next curl. After all the curls cool down, you can release them and achieve a finished look of perfect curls.

With a bit of practical advice, you can get the curl you want for your special night. Of course, you can always get some help by making an appointment at The Salon by Lora Brown. One of our stylists can give your hair the curl and look you desire.

How The Associate Program Compares To Being An Assistant

There are multiple paths to becoming a hair stylist. Many stylists attend Beauty Academy’s to prepare themselves for a career of hairdressing.

If you are interested in gaining an advanced education in addition to your degree from beauty school, the Associate Program at The Salon by Lora Brown may be a great option for you.

A Proven System With Proven Results

The goal of the Associate's Program is to set you up to be a successful stylist while building your skills as a businessperson. When you complete the program, you will be on your way to making more money and  have a balanced life.

The Associate's Program is part of the Summit Salon system, a renown leader in the salon industry. The Salon by Lora Brown is the only salon offering this program in Amarillo. It is a step-by-step process offered in four, 10-week programs. Students start out as brand new stylists and graduate as top performers.

What Makes The Associate's Program Different From Being An Assistant?

Every businessman and woman can benefit from the advanced education of a master's degree, including stylists. That's what makes the Associate's Program unique. It is the only advanced education system that equips stylists with the skills needed to turning the job into a lifelong career.

Did you know that 80 percent of stylists leave the profession within two years? A lack of money, training and growing and retaining a clientele are the biggest factors for this high turnover rate.

New stylists often struggle to gain the experience they need to make money. They have basic training but no mentor, and a good understanding of how to grow a clientele and keep them coming back.

The Associate's Program has success built into its very bones. With this program, you gain:
  • Quality training from stylists who have been in the industry for several years.
  • An experienced mentor who has a proven track record
  • A life coach to help you reach your goals
  • Knowledge to tap into your creative side
  • A larger skill set to grow and keep a strong clientele
  • The ability to work with entrepreneurs who see hair styling as their calling
  • The skills needed to make your passion a career

Like other master's degrees, the Associate's Program provides you with a technical skillset you won't find anywhere else. Not only do you gain the experience you need to be a hair stylist, but you also get the skills you need to manage your career and take it to the highest level.

Many students of the Associate's Program actually get their technical training at a Beauty Academy then, they come to the Program to refine their skills and to gain the advanced training they need for success.

If you are interested in learning more about the Associate's Program, give The Salon by Lora Brown a call today.

Do you have a passion for hair and beauty? Do you love meeting new people? Are you looking for a flexible career path?

Becoming a professional hair stylist could be the perfect career for you. A career in hairdressing is creative, challenging and fun. It can also be highly rewarding.

Here are seven reasons why you should consider becoming a professional hair stylist:

  1. Job satisfaction — Hair stylists consistently report a high level of job satisfaction. In fact, recent studies show that stylists are the happiest workers. Stylists enjoy a creative outlet, flexible work hours and the opportunity to develop lasting relationships with clients. They can customize their careers in ways that give them the greatest satisfaction.
  2. Ongoing education opportunities — The world of style changes constantly and the best stylists stay on top of the hottest trends. Stylists receive training through beauty school, master programs like the Associate Program, and internships with salons. Unlike traditional education, hairdressers enjoy hands-on training in a career field where every day brings something new.
  3. Ability to be your own boss — Hairdressing is ideal for people who like to work independently or with others. Stylists can choose to join a salon and become part of a community, open a booth, or even start up their own salon.
  4. Flexibility — As a hair stylist, you aren't tied to a 9-to-5 job. Once you grow your clientele, If you have children in school, you can adjust your schedule so that you can drop them off and pick them up. You can be apart of planning your schedule for more of a work and balanced life.
  5. Job security — Even when the economy is down, people still need to get their hair cut. If you want a secure, recession-proof career, hairstyling may be right for you. According to the Census Bureau, hairdressing was one of the few careers to grow during the recession of 2008 and 2009. Even as the economy fluctuates, most people aren't willing to sacrifice their hair cut and color to save money. Demand for hair stylists will always be high.
  6. Good money — As with any career, when you start out as a hair stylist, you likely won't make your ideal salary. But hair styling is one of those jobs where seniority and experience pay off. Programs like the Associate Program can equip you with the knowledge necessary  grow and earn a good salary and even save for retirement.
  7. Lasting relationships — Hair stylists meet a variety of people each year. The salon chair welcomes open discussion, leading to deep and engaging conversations as you work. Every new person that sits in your chair has the potential to become a loyal client or even a lifelong friend.

Becoming a hair stylist will open up opportunities anywhere you live or want to live. But, to become the best you can be, you do need training, mentoring, and a life coach to help you reach your goals.
