What Hair Color Lasts The Longest?

hair colors
Taking on a bold, new hair color is an easy and fun way to change things up in the new year, but before you take the plunge, you'll want to research hair dye and which colors will give you your desired effect. For your convenience, we collected some information about popular hair color choices, and how they react over time.

Radiant Red

Artificial redheads know the pain of watching their color fade. Artificial reds, for a myriad of different reasons, fade faster than any other color in the color palette. The reason is complex and scientific, but the long and short of it is that the molecules used in red dye don't penetrate deep into the shaft of the hair. Because of this, it is more prone to washing out and thus fading over time. Intense reds fade the quickest and most notably, while auburn and more red-tinted browns tend to have more staying power.

Bewitching Blonde

If you are a brunette with plans of going blonde, you should be aware that going blonde isn't exactly a dying process. Instead, the color needs to be stripped, then toner applied to get the color you are seeking. Because of this, blonde dyes do have staying power, but the hair needs to be treated with care to ensure the color doesn't turn brassy.

Brunette Beauty

Brown dyes have the most staying power. Brown is the most common natural hair color, so fading colors generally just turn into another brown. Brown dye also penetrates the hair more deeply than other dyes, leading to a more locked in color. Different shades of brown are the most low maintenance hair dye options.

Bold Brights

Recently, a new trend has emerged. More people are dying their hair vibrant colors. From blues to rainbows to everything in between, this trend is especially popular with the younger crowd. While the lavenders and pinks you see on Pinterest are certainly eye-catching, the colors come with heavy upkeep.

In most cases, bright colors can only be added to hair that has been stripped of its natural hue. After that is done, the color is added.

Remember, the brighter and more intense the color, the more likely it is to fade. Lavender, a relatively new trend, has more staying power than hot pink. Muted blues have more staying power than fire reds.

Once you've picked the color that will turn you into a whole new you, call the professionals at The Salon by Lora Brown. We'll be happy to help you find the perfect shade for your new hairstyle.

New Study Finds Causes Of Gray And Balding Hair

Gray hair and balding are common issues many men and women face. These conditions can take a toll on your self-confidence. And once hair starts to fall out, it can be difficult or impossible to grow it back.

The causes of grayness and balding have been relatively unknown. However, a recent study sheds some light on why some people have gray or balding hair.

The Study
The breakthrough from Genes and Development began as a study on cells causing tumors but turned into a fascinating look at the causes of hair-related issues. The study focused on a protein called KROX20, which affects the cells that make up strands of hair, and SCF, a gene impacting hair development.

The Results
During the study, the researcher analyzed how manipulating KROX20 protein and SCF gene affected hair volume and color.

They found that taking away SCF caused hair to turn white and taking away KROX20 caused hair to fall out completely. Adding or deleting one gene was all it took to completely alter a person's appearance.

Changing The Industry
Manipulating genes is no easy task. However, the study provided some important information about how grayness and balding occurs and showed that it can be avoided.

With further research, it may be possible to develop products that could add the genes back into strands of hair to reverse the cosmetic effects.

Obviously, hair loss and graying are a huge part of the hair industry. Those who struggle with these problems are eager to find solutions. Now that the research has begun, developing new products could be the next step to ending hair loss and graying hair.

What It Means For Clients
Anyone who has their hair styled regularly knows that there are always new products and services coming out. There are ways to solve everything from a lack of volume to color mishaps. When science gets involved, there's no limit to what can be done.

For clients, it means you'll be able to tackle every hair care issue and get the look you love with less time and effort, with the help of a great stylist.

What It Means For Stylists
Changes in the industry mean changes for stylists. If researchers are able to determine how to prevent gray hair and baldness, stylists will have an even greater supply of tools to help clients change their look and become more confident in their appearance.

Trends in the beauty industry are always changing, but having a great stylist can make all the difference in staying up to date on hair trends and looking your best. Call The Salon by Lora Brown today to make an appointment.

What Transformation Did The Client Desire?
This was the client's second round of balayage. The first time she had virgin hair and was a little afraid to go too dramatic too soon. Three months later, she decided she was ready to go lighter.

What Challenges Was The Client Experiencing?
Although she was ready to kick it up a notch, she still wanted her color to look natural and soft. She also wanted to keep her natural base color.

What Was The Salon’s Solution?
The Salon decided to balayage her using a paint brush. Even though they applied it higher and heavier, The Salon still wanted a soft transition from her natural base color.

The paint brush not only gives the client a seamless color application, but it also offers a perfect grow out. In the back, The Salon left some of the client's natural color untouched, which allows for some depth, making any balayage look soft even when going lighter.

Before & After: A Bold, Modern Bob

before-after
What Transformation Did The Client Desire?
The client wanted to update her style with a younger, more modern look. With her hair color, she wanted to lighten and brighten it. However, she didn’t want a high-maintenance style that would require frequent upkeep.

What Challenges Was The Client Experiencing?
The client had dry, brittle ends. She wanted a cut and color she could easily style every day and one that also encouraged her to let her hair down, rather than putting it up in a ponytail.

What Was The Salon’s Solution?
Sandra brought the length of the client’s hair to a bob that sat on her shoulders. She gave the client a blunt, strong baseline to provide a definition of layers and texture; this type of look is easy to style every day. With the client’s color, Sandra chose a heavy balayage all around, but kept the client’s natural hair color as her base; this allows for a seamless grow out and low-maintenance touch-ups.

Before & After: Lightened & Heightened

What Transformation Did The Client Desire?
The client wanted to brighten up her color, but wanted it to look as natural as possible. For her cut, she wanted a style that gave her more height, but that was simple enough for her to style.

What Challenges Was The Client Experiencing?
The client has dark grey hair and it easily pulled the color yellow. However, the client didn't want any warmth in the hair. Cut-wise, she has really fine hair, which tends to go flat and split in the crown.

What Was The Salon’s Solution?
To help the client achieve her desired look, Sarah used a couple of high-lift colors that canceled out any yellowing of the hair while lightening it at the same time. She also use a blue-based lightener to make the color pop.

For the cut, Sarah tapered the neckline close to the neck, stacking it up the back to build height. She left the crown longer, but texturized the crown so the client’s hair wouldn't fall flat and split.

Before & After: Bright & Blonde

What Transformation Did The Client Desire?
The client wanted her blonde hair to be brighter, but with definition. She also wanted more warmth in her hair, but was concerned about it looking brassy.

What Challenges Was The Client Experiencing?
The client has pretty dark hair, but she prefers to be a brighter blonde. Her hair tends to pull brassy colors because of the level of color of her natural hair color.

What Was The Salon’s Solution?
Sarah used a high lift color that canceled out the client’s brassiness. She also used a blue-based lightener and a demi-light blonde with a cool undertone for her lowlight. After Sarah processed the client’s hair, she shampooed it and applied a glosser, which added warmth. She also added a cool color that gave the client’s hair a very high shine.

Before & After: A Soft, Natural Balayage

3/1/2017

before-after
What Transformation Did The Client Desire?
Sarah has gone one year without hair color and wanted a lower-maintenance color rather than highlights from her roots to ends. She asked for a color that would be lighter at the ends with a softer growing out period, with lighter pieces framing her face.

What Challenges Was The Client Experiencing?
Sarah was frustrated that she didn’t have time to get her hair colored as often as she would like. Her greys were starting show more and she wanted them to blend in rather than having to do an all-over color to cover the grey hairs up.

What Was The Salon’s Solution?
Lora did a balayage technique that left some of Sarah’s natural hair apparent and used two colors of blonde for a softer line of growth and dimension. Lora then glazed Sarah’s hair to give her a cooler blonde with a violet glosser, and softened both her natural hair, grey hair and her balayaged hair.

What Transformation Did The Client Desire?
Liz had moved out of town and returned to The Salon, wanting to get her previous color back.

Her roots, length and ends were too dark and lacked shine. She wanted lighter highlights and to lighten her roots so her grey would not appear as quickly

What Challenges Was The Client Experiencing?
Liz ‘s hair was dry, frizzy and dull, but she wanted to wear it naturally. She also wanted to cover up her grey and add more highlights.

What Was The Salon’s Solution?
Lora lightened Liz’s base one shade and added more warmth to her roots. She color-blended with low lights and a caramel blonde. Lora also added pieces of light blonde to make Liz’s new color pop and to also soften her former dark hair color.

Before & After: A Smooth & Shiny Transformation

2/15/2017

before after
What Transformation Did The Client Desire?
The client wanted to go from heavy highlight to a balayage. She also wanted a lower maintenance style, but wanted to keep her natural color as her base. She naturally pulls a gold undertone and wanted to be a cooler blonde.

What Challenges Was The Client Experiencing?
The client had a really defined line of demarcation from heavy foiling over a long period of time. She was on the gold side of blonde and had about 3-4 inches of new growth.

What Was The Salon’s Solution?
The client’s natural hair color is a really nice level 7, so Sandra used an ash tone level 7 demi-permanent color to use in between her balayage, which helps break the line of demarcation and brings down her natural hair color.

The ash tone also helps control the natural warmth and gold tones the client tends to pull. We also did a Shades EQ glosser. The glosser not only tones and puts the icy cooler tones in her hair, but it also conditions and adds shine. This technique will allow the client to go longer in between appointments. The glosser is also a great way to freshen up hair color or to keep the color tones in between color touch-ups.

Before & After: A New Shade of Blonde

What Transformation Did The Client Desire?
Melissa desired a heavier balayage and to get rid of the yellow/gold tones in her hair.

What Challenges Was The Client Experiencing?
Melissa thought her hair gets too brassy once her color fades, but she still likes to go lighter with her highlights. She wanted a cooler blonde color, but not grey.

What Was The Salon’s Solution?
Lora gave Melissa a heavier balayage and a violet/pearl glaze to keep her hair light, but to also create a pearlescent tone for shine and long-lasting color.
