Hair loss is an often talked about topic when it comes to men. After all, there are products and services specifically designed to deal with male pattern baldness, but hair loss is a problem for the female population as well.
While less common, women who are balding or have thinning hair is a major issue and can cause distress. With that being said, there is a certain amount of hair loss that is perfectly normal for women and won’t lead to thinning of the crown.
How Much Hair Loss is Normal?
According to experts, most women will lose between 50 and 100 strands of hair per day. Even up to 150 strands per day is not considered a problem. Most women won’t even notice the number of hairs they lose each day because it’s a process that happens over the course of time. That is to say, you won’t see 100 hairs in your shower drain every morning, but you’ll notice hair in your car, on your floor and in other places.
Experts say you can test the number of hairs you lose by pulling a piece of hair containing about 60 hairs away from your scalp, and slowly running your hand down it. Normally, between 5 and 8 strands will come loose.
Why Does Hair Fall Out?
All hair has a cycle, according to experts. 90% of the hair on your head is in the growing phase of its life. It is continuing to grow from the root. About 10% of the hair is in a “resting” phase. This is the phase during which hair falls out so new hair growth can continue. It is perfectly normal and healthy.
Normal hair loss is a part of life, but if you are losing more than the normal amount of hair, there could be a medical issue causing it. Women with PCOS, thyroid conditions, hormones, your age and other medical problems may experience hair loss at an accelerated rate.
Women who have just given birth may also notice more of their hair is falling out than what is considered normal. Often times, dealing with the underlying medical cause can yield good results, but there are supplements that can also help, in some cases. For patients undergoing chemo, there is a new cancer therapy that may fight hair loss.
