Hair Loss - Stress and Covid

A few months back, I noticed many of my clients had hair growing back in and it was all the same length of regrowth. It was then I realized how unusual this was. Never have I seen this in the 35 years I have been behind the chair. This must be related to stress and Covid. Most of us go through a shedding period at different times of the year. But this all at once was something I had yet to experience.

We all have stress, but not to this level. After a year of Covid, I can say we all have known someone who has had it, or maybe we even had it ourselves, we may have lost a family member or friends. This has all taken a toll on us all, and stress causes hair loss. If you have had Covid along with a high fever, that too causes stress and hair loss. So what can you do about it now?

Be stress free. Sure, we would all love to snap our fingers and this world would be perfect and free of stress! But in reality, stress is just a part of life. Taking steps to help the hair loss is what I recommend. Exercise, good vitamins and rest are the first steps.

  • Turn off the news, listen to positive audio books or podcasts, and do something nice for others! Do good to feel good!

  • Take vitamins. I take B-12, D, and K just to name a few. Several years back I joined an age management program called "The Matrix." This program is something I have been apart of for many years in Amarillo, Texas started by Dr. Patrick Proffer. I have my blood drawn every 6 months and sent to off to Boston for a deep, in depth look at my blood work. He then makes recommendations based on what vitamins I'm deficient in, as well as options to regulate my hormones. (Click here for more information) This all plays a huge part in stress and hair loss.

  • Take collagen and proteins. Your body uses the amino acids in collagen to build hair proteins and strengthen the skin that contains your hair roots. It may also prevent hair follicle damage. I personally recommend Ancient Nutrition's Multi-Collagen Protein (click here to check it out) I mix it in my coffee everyday.

  • Apply Topical Products. Oribe's Power drops contain Biotin which plays an important role in the health of your hair, skin, and nails. Also Oribe's Serene Scalp line (includes shampoo, conditioner, an exfoliating scrub, a spot treatment and a soothing leave on treatment spray) These work best if used daily, or every time you shampoo.

Healthy hair starts within. What you eat and how you take care of yourself reflects in your hair, your skin, and your nails. I personally have found that the earlier you take preventative measures orally and topically, the chances of stress and hair loss decrease significantly. Hair grows and average of a 1/2 inch each month. For those who take vitamins, it can increase the growth rate up to 3/4 an inch per month! Take care of yourself, be patient, and give it time. It will grow back! One more tip: if you have a scheduled surgery or medical procedure that would cause stress to your body, up your collagen intake and vitamins several months or weeks before. Always be sure to check with your doctor first, but this too can lessen the hair loss and aid in recovery.
